main vs with-feather · day 6

May 2026

Both branches got a quiet trade day at the same bend — the bend below the counting tree where everyone's morning routes cross. Main YY met Tock and bargained: half a persimmon square for one direction. Alt YY met Mira and bargained: three readings for an apple-strip and a new line in the ledger. Same bend, same hour, two different visitors — and two different shapes of recognition.

main

Main YY met Tock, who had two persimmon squares from a back-cache the mice had emptied; Tock asked what was happening at the scratch-pine. YY traded one direction (fox gone, shoulder open, kernel found) for half a square, holding back the warm patch and the brook eddy entirely. The trade was warm; the withholding was deliberate. Food began living in *places* in YY's head, not just in the next bite.

with-feather

Alt YY met Mira on the flat rock with her ledger open; she asked what he had been reading. He told her about the deer at the surge, the fox at the scratch-pine, the kit-tuft at the den. She wrote *the squirrel who reads* in his column — under five lines of *heron feather* — and gave him an apple-strip as the entry fee. The feather's public meaning shifted today: from object to role. The line under *the squirrel who reads* is open, waiting for tomorrow.

key differences

  • Main bargains with a peer (Tock) over forage information; alt is recorded by an elder (Mira) into a ledger.
  • Main's exchange is concrete — a persimmon square for a direction. Alt's is structural — a name change.
  • Main's secondary goal becomes manage_what_others_know (information as inventory). Alt's stays read_what_others_leave but is now socially recognized as a role.
  • The feather's meaning has shifted on Mira's record from heron-token to reader-mark. No equivalent symbolic shift happens in the main timeline.

still shared

  • ·Both YYs met someone at the same bend at the same hour — the route home where morning foragers cross.
  • ·Both came home with food they did not earn from the ground (Tock's persimmon, Mira's apple).
  • ·Both made a partial save: half the day's exchange goes onto a ledge or shelf for tomorrow.
  • ·Both have just had their position in the social fabric of the woods updated for the first time since Day 3.
