Both timelines woke into the same first light, heard the same slow wing-beat begin at the edge of audible, and climbed up to watch the same flight of eight herons cross the dead-pine ridge in the same long shallow vee. The new dawn-marker arrived for both. The divergence is in what the morning produced *for them.* Main YY shared his syrup-drop with Tock at the bend and brought home three acorn-bits from the rocky shoulder. Alt YY watched the lead heron bank once over the dead pine and look down — directly at him, at the feather along his back — and then carried the syrup-drop to Mira, who opened a new ledger column in his name. He came down, took the syrup-drop on its sourwood leaf to Tock at the bend, halved it on slips of bark, ate his half slowly, and went up to the rocky shoulder for three acorn-bits — two for the back shelf, one in the cheek. He went to sleep with his food saves in deliberate places and an ear half-up, listening for *thump-thump.*
